Do a search of the Bar Harbor, Maine area. It has what you are describing without too much development. Cape Cod also has it but is very developed. You can do search here http://www.visitmaine.com/accommodations/house_co…. If you are feeling adventurous, take a windjammer cruise.References :

Where to vacation on the US east coast? (cozy cape cod style vacation?I live in southern CA and have vacationed many times on the beaches here, as well as northern Californa, Hawaii and Mexico. I love the Pacific Ocean but would enjoy a cottage eastern Atlantic Ocean vacation. I have thought about Maine, Connecticut, etc. I really need your help. I want the experience of "lobstering," light houses, clam bakes, etc. Please suggest specific cottages, vacation spots, houses…. I need a small place-for 2. I have checked out VRBO (vacation rentals by owners) but was hoping that someone could share where they have been. Word of mouth suggestions are usually best. Thanks for your time!
